Healthcare Communication Training

Are you looking to strengthen the communication and interpersonal skills of your healthcare teams?

Healthcare communication training can help professionals and teams build confidence, strengthen relationships and navigate challenging interactions. Building on our established work in nursing education, 2engage is now adapting its participatory approach for CPD, preceptorship and workforce development. Our communication training has been developed and delivered at scale through our partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Chester.

Grounded in communication theory and informed by applied theatre techniques, this training combines immersive, real-world scenarios in which participants discuss, practise and reflect on challenging interactions with patients, families, colleagues and wider healthcare teams. By exploring situations from different perspectives, they develop a greater understanding of how communication, behaviour and personal assumptions can influence trust, professional relationships and the experience of care.

Participants can practise challenging interactions, make mistakes safely, refine their approach and learn from their peers.

Participant evaluations found that 98.4% of nursing students agreed that the training supported their learning and professional development.

Building on this established approach, we are now adapting the training for CPD, preceptorship and workforce development. We will work with your organisation to tailor the scenarios, content, and learning outcomes to your workforce’s needs.

Transforming Healthcare Training

Our training is grounded in theory, but participants will learn by doing. Informed by applied theatre techniques, we use creative, participatory approaches alongside structured reflection to help healthcare professionals build confidence and strengthen interpersonal skills.

Participants will take part in a variety of hands-on, interactive exercises that simulate real-world clinical scenarios whilst aligning with the NMC and HCPC standards of proficiency. They’ll be challenged to interact, make mistakes, refine their approach, and learn from their peers in a safe and supportive environment.

We are proud to work with the University of Chester’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, whose wider commitment to innovative education has received national recognition. In 2026, the University won Teaching Innovation of the Year: Curriculum at the Student Nursing Times Awards for its simulated night shift initiative, designed to prepare student nurses for the realities of clinical practice.

Our Core Training Sessions

Good communication is not a single skill used in a single situation. It shapes how healthcare professionals build trust, understand concerns, share information, manage pressure and work with others. Informed by healthcare communication research, narrative medicine and real-world practice, our practical, face-to-face sessions can be tailored to your organisation and support relevant NMC and HCPC Standards of Proficiency.

The content can be mixed and matched, allowing you to select the topics most relevant to your teams. Sessions may include:

1. Empathetic Communication, Rapport and Trust

Using active listening, effective questions and compassionate language to build meaningful relationships with patients, families and carers.

2. Inclusive and Accessible Communication

Adapting communication for different needs, experiences and cultures while recognising bias, assumptions and barriers to understanding and inclusion.

3. Non-Verbal Communication

Exploring how body language, tone, pace, facial expression and other paralinguistic cues can influence trust, understanding and outcomes.

4. Breaking Significant News and Difficult Conversations

Practising sensitive and emotionally charged conversations with clarity, empathy, honesty and professionalism.

5. De-escalation and Conflict Resolution

Recognising rising tension, responding calmly and using practical communication techniques to manage conflict and challenging situations.

6. Professional Curiosity, Boundaries and Speaking Up

Developing the confidence to recognise concerns, seek clarity, maintain professional boundaries and challenge respectfully.

7. Team Communication and Collaboration

Strengthening multidisciplinary working through clear communication, constructive feedback, shared responsibility and collaborative decision-making.

20 Years in the Making

2engage CIC has over 20 years of experience using creative, participatory approaches to help people explore complex issues, build confidence and communicate more effectively. We believe meaningful change does not come from simply telling people what to do. It happens when people are given the opportunity to experience, question, practise and reflect.

Talk to us about healthcare communication training for your team; our healthcare communication training can support relevant NMC and HCPC professional standards. Take a look at our case study: How we’re training nurses to be better communicators.

Our facilitators use applied theatre, realistic scenarios and structured discussion to turn challenging subjects into practical, memorable learning experiences. We create supportive environments where participants can be honest, take risks, make mistakes safely and explore different ways of responding. We developed and delivered our approach at scale through our partnership with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Chester. We are now applying this experience to CPD, preceptorship and workforce development.
