Train the Trainer: CPD for Youth Outreach Professionals

Train the Trainer: CPD for Youth Outreach Professionals

The Challenge

Between 2019 and 2022, 2engage was commissioned to deliver full-day CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training sessions across the Higher Horizons Network and the Chester Hub.

These sessions targeted both new and existing staff members involved in youth outreach. Their roles often required them to present to large groups of secondary school students, a task many had little to no prior experience with.

Aims

The “Train the Trainer” sessions were designed to give staff practical tools and techniques to feel more confident when working with young people in schools, whether in small groups or large audiences.

Workshop Overview

The full-day training sessions focused on helping participants address common concerns and anxieties around public speaking and youth engagement. Key areas covered included:
  • Effective session preparation
  • Time management strategies
  • Behaviour management techniques
  • Engaging young audiences through icebreakers and group tasks
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the training was adapted into a 2-hour virtual format, with a focus on engaging young people in online settings. Additionally, a COVID-safe in-person version was developed, incorporating social distancing protocols and strategies for safely returning to face-to-face group work.

Outcomes

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. The Chester Hub particularly appreciated the tailored content, which addressed the needs of both experienced practitioners and those new to youth engagement.

Each workshop featured open discussions and bespoke activities designed to directly address participants’ concerns. These were paired with practical exercises to help staff build confidence and hone their presentation and classroom management skills.

The sessions brought staff together as a whole team, providing an opportunity to share best practices, strengthen working relationships, and develop consistent approaches to engaging young people.

Feedback

Jess Newton (Uni Connect Officer) shared the following reflection:

“Honestly, the day was just so helpful. Your enthusiasm for this line of work just came through and made me excited to get back out there and work properly with young people again. Going through activity ideas and even the chat about facilitation, fears, where we want to gain confidence etc., was really helpful. This last year, like it has for many, has probably been the most anxious year of my life! So for a work environment to be that comfortable and fun—it was really nice.”
